# Create Customer

POST https://api.papertracc.com/v1/profiles/customers
Content-Type: application/json

Creates a customer profile. `payment_term_id` sets the payment term used by default on this customer's invoices.

Requires the `can_create_customer_profile` permission on the key owner's role.

**Keys:** secret key only.

## Authentication

- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — Bearer authentication of the form `Bearer <token>`, where token is your auth token.
- `identity` header (required) — The identity for the active workspace.

## Request

This endpoint expects an object.

- `type` (enum, required)
  - Allowed values: `INDIVIDUAL`, `BUSINESS`
- `display_name` (string, required)
- `dedupe_mode` (enum, optional, default: skip) — How to handle a record matching one already in the workspace. `skip` (default) leaves the existing record untouched and answers 409 with it. `overwrite` updates the existing record and answers 200. `add` creates a separate record regardless of the match.
  - Allowed values: `skip`, `overwrite`, `add`
- `email` (string, optional)
- `phone` (string, optional)
- `last_name` (string, optional)
- `first_name` (string, optional)
- `company_name` (string, optional)
- `currency_code` (string, optional)
- `payment_term_id` (string, optional) — Default payment term for this customer. Applied to new invoices that name no term or due date.

## Errors

### 401 Unauthorized Error

The API key is missing or invalid, the key owner is no longer an active member of the organisation, or the key owner is not a member of the workspace in the `identity` header.

### 402 Payment Required Error

The workspace's subscription plan does not include the Open API.

### 403 Forbidden Error

Either the key owner's role does not include the permission this endpoint needs (`PERMISSION_DENIED`), or the service this endpoint belongs to is turned off for the workspace (`SERVICE_DISABLED`).

A matching customer already exists and `dedupe_mode` is `skip`. The body carries the existing customer, so the caller can link to it or retry with `dedupe_mode: add`.
